Hut Trips Introduction

Each year, our Club offers backcountry ski tours to huts in Colorado, mostly those in the 10th Mountain Division hut system.  Unless indicated otherwise, we reserve the entire hut for our group.  This is done up to a year in advance, and sign-up commences immediately upon confirmation of the reservation.  Therefore, trips are often already full at the beginning of the new ski season.  We generally do 3-night trips into a single hut, although on occasion we do longer hut-to-hut adventures.

Hut trips require at least an intermediate level of skiing ability and fitness, but the skiing itself is usually not highly technical.  Each participant must be known to the trip leader and have individual approval for the trip.

Club hut trips are for members only.  New qualified members are invited to inquire about these events.

2011-2012 Season Hut Trips

The following dates include travel to and from the trailhead, including an extra day to get back home, if needed, after exiting the hut.  Some skiers may elect to drive all the way home the day we exit the hut.  Both of the following hut trips are for three nights at the hut.  No hut-to-hut trips planned for this season.

All Hut Trip participants should read PDF Document icon Guidelines for Tour Participants and PDF Document icon Hut Trip Policy.

Cost is $108, including dinners at the hut.  This relatively new hut is located off of Tennessee Pass, near Leadville, Colorado.  Skiers of unproven capability will not be turned away as long as they are capable of skiing at a Class II level, and are able to carry a full pack.  They must possess appropriate backcountry skis, boots and bindings.  We did this as a beginner trip a few years ago with good results.  The ski in from Tennessee Pass is less than half a mile, with very little elevation gain.  This is intended as a FUN learning experience.  No pressure; no worries; just do it!

Cost is $147, including dinners at the hut, fees and taxes.  We will depart Albuquerque on Saturday, March 3.  We will occupy the hut March 4-6, and ski out and return on Wednesday, March 7.  All skiers should allow an extra day, March 8, in the event we are unable or unwilling to get all the way home.  The first night we will stay at the hostel in Leadville, which we did this past season.  We will stay there again on this and other trips that take place in the Leadville area.

Skiing at Yellowstone

Yellowstone National Park, Feb 2007

Overnight Car Trips Introduction

Overnight car trips vary widely.  Some are weekend trips planned just weeks ahead of time, occasionally inspired by a good snow year!  Others are planned a year ahead.  Lodging is generally in motels or condos.

You will need to consult each trip description for the level of fitness and level of technical ability required for the trip, or talk with the trip leader.

The overnight car trips are open to club members only.  Transportation is by carpooling.  Lodging in motels or condos.

2011-2012 Season Overnight Car Trips

Yellowstone National Park
January 28 to February 3, 2012

Yellowstone has some of the best cross country skiing in the west, in one of the most diverse places on earth.  We will have the chance to visit hot springs, follow buffalo herds, and maybe, if they cooperate, observe some of the wolf packs in the wild. We fly into Bozeman, MT, on Saturday, then take the stage (actually a small bus) to Mammoth Hot Springs at the north entrance to the park.  The trip starts with an orientation on Saturday evening.  We will spend 3 days in Mammoth Hot Springs, 2 days at Old Faithful Lodge, then the last day back at Mammoth before finishing Friday evening.  All ski routes into the back country will be guided by park rangers.

Cost for the trip is expected to be approximately $3,000, including air transportation, lodging, meals and guides.  The trip is limited to 20 people.

Chama, NM - Car Trip
February 10-12, 2012

members login for trip leader contact info

This trip is intended primarily as a benefit for those who completed the beginner class scheduled for January.  However, any and all class I skiers are welcome to join this group.

Additionally, between now and mid-winter, should a Class II leader emerge, Class II skiers will also be welcome.  This is a challenge to those who have wanted to lead ski trips, to consider taking on the Class II trip responsibilities.

Durango, CO - Hostel Trip
Monday, February 6, 2012 – Thursday, February 9, 2012 (NOTE: individuals may elect a shorter stay if they wish)

members login for trip leader contact info

Hostelling is a relatively new feature of our outings program, and this will be our second foray to Durango.  We will stay at the wonderful Durango Hometown Hostel.  This trip is unlike other Club outings, in that the format is freestyle; skiers can self-organize and visit the Nordic center, ski any of several backcountry options, or ski the nearby lift-served resort.  Those who wish could also drive about 1.5 hours to Wolf Creek Pass to ski backcountry or the Wolf Creek lift-served area.

We will have group breakfasts and dinners at the hostel, except for those who may prefer to check out the many area restaurants.  One need not arrive or depart with the group on the above-listed dates; in fact, we already have two skiers who are joining us on Feb 6.  Leader will help facilitate group outings and carpooling.  Meal details will be worked out once there is some definition to the group.  Folks who are willing to help prepare meals are especially welcome.

Check out the hostel: www.DurangoHometownHostel.com.  We stayed there two years ago, and this place gets a 5 star rating from out group! The cost is around $25 PPPN, although a group discount of some sort is anticipated.  Details should be received in the next few days.

We already have about a dozen folks going, several of whom are not acquainted with each other.  Don’t pass this up just because you don’t have friends going; you’ll make friends on this trip ! We have room for you, but you’ll need to jump on this in the next week or so.

Those folks who plan to go on the Chama trip which starts February 10 can easily jet over to Chama to meet that group there.

This trip is for Club members, although members may bring a guest.  Not a member yet?   What are you waiting for?   Join up!
